Eats: BNL’s “If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours”
In all the hubbub of Swine Flu taking over the media, there was a divorce brewing in our “Neighbors to the North” that got little or no coverage. Seems that Canadia had a falling out with one of their favorite sons, Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies. Actually, it wasn’t Canadia that kicked him out of the band, it looks to be more of an amicable split according to BNL’s website and the newly-solo Steven’s Blog. Steven will be missed. In the live shows he was the “Bonnie” to Ed’s “Clyde”, pouring emotion into heartfelt renditions of “Break Your Heart”, and rapping about running up the stairs at Red Rocks a couple of songs later.
What’s a band to do? Go on tour to prove to the die-hard fans that they’re still the same group, they just weigh less as a whole? Put out a greatest hits album to milk a few more loonies out of Canadian wallets to let fans have a memento of “BNL: The Steven Page Years”? No. They make ice cream!
According to Ben & Jerry’s Canadian website…the flavor is “A Collision of Chocolate & Vanilla Ice Creams mixed with Chocolate-covered toffee, White Chocolate Chunks, Peanut Butter Cups & Chocolate-Covered almonds.” Right there on the homepage, there’s a link for 3 free downloads from BNL:
- Raisins
- If I Had $1,000,000 [Live]
- Wind It Up
Am I sad that Steven left the band, yes! Am I excited for his new solo ventures, yes! Nothing that can’t be fixed with a road trip to an unsuspecting Canuck’s freezer to snatch a pint of Ben & Jerry’s from under their nose.
