One Thing Windows 7 Must Fix!
A lot of the time I will have quit a few apps running at the same time bouncing between files, programs, and the web. I consider myself bi-techual when it comes to working in different OS’s…I use both Windows and Mac environments without leaning one way or the other. But there is one thing that I can’t fathom why the folks in Redmond would allow me to do in Vista.
Ask youself, how many times have you done this? Cleaned up a whole bunch of files from your desktop or hard drive, sent them to the “recycle bin” and pulled one of these:
All of a sudden, the Recycle Bin is gone! MIA, not there, Error 404, 86′d, gone the way of the dodo, or whatever you may call it. Point is…it’s no longer on your desktop! I don’t know how many times I’ve done this. Too many that I care to recount. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel after going through this so many times, I know how to fix it, and it’s simple! Here’s how:
- Calm down, you’re not going to get the Blue Screen Of Death.
- Click on the Start Menu and go to your Control Panel.
- Click on Appearances & Personalization and then click on Personalization.
- In the upper left corner, you’ll see a text “link” that says Change Desktop Icons, click it.
- A pop-up opens with some check boxes and icons. Click on the check box that says Recycle Bin, and you’re done. Your Recycle Bin will return to its rightful home on your desktop. Voila!
As the desktop icon has evolved from Trash to the Recycle Bin, I wonder if Windows 7 will have a Compost Bin (because brown is the new green?)…a place for your docs, jpegs, psd’s, and other crap to sit and fester while it deteriorates 1 byte at a time.

I love the idea of a compost pit. I’ve made the same mistake a number of times. I don’t understand why Microsoft loves to play desktop icon roulette with each version of Windows. What I’d like to see done is upon first boot, Windows asks me which icons I’d like to place on the desktop instead of hunting down those I need. I love the layout of your blog, BTW. You have a new reader.
